Oakland Special Collections

The F.W. Olin Special collections, housed in the Elinor Raas Heller Rare Book Room, contains several unique collections that preserve the works of musical artists that intersected with the Bay Area and Mills College.

  • Charles Shere Papers
    Collection consists of compositions, writings, reference materials, correspondence, and subject files documenting Shere's career as journalist and composer.
     
  • Darius Milhaud Collection
    This collection documents Milhaud’s career as a composer and faculty at Mills College. The collection includes articles and clippings, programs, correspondence, writings, photographs, newsletters, manuscript scores, books, published scores, recordings, autograph scores, audio, video, and memorabilia.
     
  • Emma Nevada Collection
    The Emma Nevada collection consists of Nevada family personal objects and ephemera as well as research materials for the projected book on Emma Nevada to be entitled The Miner’s Canary.
     
  • Glenn Spearman Papers
    Personal papers of tenor saxophonist Glenn Spearman.
     
  • Joe Catalano papers
    Collection consists of research materials, subject files, compositions and projects, materials relating to the arts community and organizations, publicity materials, audiovisual materials and personal papers documenting Joe Catalano’s career as a composer, performer, and producer.
     
  • Lou Harrison Manuscripts
    Manuscripts of the composer Lou Harrison.

Center for Contemporary Music

The Center for Contemporary Music (CCM) has been a fixture of the musical life of Mills campus since 1966. Under the auspices of the center is an archive of recordings, technical journals, periodicals, and books. A portion of the CCM recording collection is being housed in the F.W. Olin Special Collections where it can be accessed by researchers.
