A citation manager is a piece of software that helps you collect and organize your research and create bibliographies and in-text citations. Citation managers generally offer a range of citation styles and features to choose from.
The Northeastern library supports EndNote, Mendeley, RefWorks and Zotero. We also support the use of BibTeX and LaTeX.
While citation managers generally have the same basic functions, each one offers some specific features.
Our citation manager comparison chart (below) can help you identify the features that will work best for you. See also our tutorial on choosing a citation manager.
You may wonder: are there tools to help with citation and references?
Free options: Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote Basic
A EndNote Licensed product is available for use by current NU faculty, staff, and students. These tools can help you collect and manage your references, and auto-format citations and bibliographies in your papers.
Check our pages on avoiding plagiarism and citations and bibliographies.
If you're not sure which citation format to use, please check with your instructor.

To search for dissertations beyond NU, use ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, Global.
For help with writing projects, consider a visit to Northeastern's Writing Center. Same-day walk in service is available in 136 Snell Library; assistance by appointment is offered in the 412 Holmes center. Online consulting is also available (all appointments in EST).
The Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) is an extraordinary resource for all aspects of paper writing, including citation and bibliography. The Site Map is a good place to begin.
