Tackling a new topic?
Look for review articles and topic overviews. Review articles summarize the current state of understanding on a topic, and summarizes previously published studies. Many databases, including Medline, PubMed, Web of Science, Business Source Complete, Social Sciences Premium Collection, allow you to limit your search results to review articles.
Overview articles often provide background information, historical context, chronology, pro/con arguments, bibliographies leading to earlier research and major researchers on the topic. For topic overviews, try searching in dictionaries and encyclopedias. For in-depth overviews, try CQ Researcher.
