Entrance and Exit Security

  • Be attentive and aware of traffic in the foyer, including the turnstiles and the exit gates.
  • If you need assistance, call x2350 to get an on-duty supervisor. We are can assist and speak with a patron if needed.
  • Report suspicious or unusual behavior to a supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Soliciting access to the Snell Library is not permitted. If you notice anyone asking NU members to sign them in, please tell the supervisor, who can report them to NUPD.
  • General photography or videography is not allowed in the library without express permission from the Marketing and Communications office in the library. If you notice anyone taking pictures or video, please report them to the supervisor.
  • Do not let patrons enter through the exit gates. Once they exit, they must come back in through the turnstile entrance.
  • Do not allow patrons to pass bags or folders above or around the security exit.
  • Do not let people leave any bags, or other personal belongings at the security desk.

Call the Supervisor When:

  • The patron is not listening to/understanding the policy.
  • The patron is belligerent or threatening.
  • There are problems with the system – either technical problems with the gates, or computer problems with the program/website.

Call NUPD/Hit the Panic Button When:

  • You believe your health or that of those around you may be in danger.
  •  If you see someone with a weapon who is not a police officer or other licensed official, hit the panic button immediately, and notify staff as soon as possible.
  • Do not stop the user, but try to see where they are going.
  • If you need to, hide as best you can at the access point, and remove yourself from the desk area as soon as safely possible.

Entering with someone else's ID

  • Do not allow them entry. Using someone else’s ID is against NU policy. Warn them that violations of this rule can result in disciplinary action, both for themselves and the person whose ID they are using.
  • Please ask them to sign in with their own NUID or partner university ID.
  • If they are not an NU member or a partner, are they someone's guest?
  • If they are no guest or NU or Partner: do not allow them entry.
    • Alert the on-duty supervisor to escort them out of the building.
  1. If the exit alarm goes off, ask the patron to set any electronics  (phones, laptops, or smart watches) on the desk and go through without them.
  2. If the alarm still goes off, send the patron to the Help and Information Desk. Staff/students there will ask if the patron has any library materials, material from another library, or bookstore materials, or ask the patron to open their bag.
  3. If you think that a patron is trying to steal something, please get a supervisor immediately.
  4. If you feel you need help dealing with any patron, do not hesitate to call a supervisor on duty for assistance.
