What makes an article "academic"?

An academic article, also called a scholarly article, is an article written by an expert in an academic field, for other experts and scholars.

Here are clues for how to determine whether an article is scholarly:

  • There is biographical or affliation information showing the author is a researcher(s), professional(s) or other expert(s).
  • The article appears in an academic journal rather than a magazine or newspaper.*
  • The article is of significant length (this varies depending on the discipline).
  • The article summarizes previous findings and includes a substantial bibliography or reference list.
  • The article is peer reviewed.*
  • The article has a hypothesis and presents original research that tests the hypothesis, or retests an earlier hypothesis.
  • The article explores or analyzes a topic using data or methods that are original or unique.
  • The article uses technical or expert-level language reflecting the jargon of the discipline.

*You may be able to determine if a journal is peer reviewed by looking it up in Scholar OneSearch to see if it has the "peer reviewed" icon and tag. It's important to note that academic journals, in addition to articles, also publish invited papers, editorials, book reviews, film reviews, letters, columns, and other marginalia that are not scholarly or peer reviewed.  Make sure you look for some other clues to evaluate the information.

Where to find academic articles

Do I really have to pay? No, as a current Northeastern student, faculty member, or staff you do not have to pay for articles needed for academic work.  To order an article:

  1. Search the article title or DOI in Scholar OneSearch to see if we already have access, and click the PDF or vendor name for access.
  2. If nothing comes up, you can make an Interlibrary Loan request (select "Access Your Illiad Account" and follow the directions).
    • Northeastern staff will find the article and email you a PDF at no cost to you.
