Reports on Boston and its Neighborhoods

The Boston Planning and Development Agency publishes a broad array of publications on the people and neighborhoods of Boston.

 

Historical Trends in Boston Neighborhoods since 1950.  Provides data from the Decennial Census and American Community Survey. Information on demographics, housing, race, educational attainment, and labor force participation.
Trends in Poverty and Inequality. Identifies populations historically and currently at risk of poverty and inequality. Text supported by maps and infographics.
Boston in Context: Neighborhoods.  Provides an overview of demographic and housing characteristics by neighborhood. Includes data on poverty, income, race/ethnicity, as well as a broad range of other variables.
Boston's Racial Groups. Summarizes demographic and economic data of racial and ethnic groups.
Boston's Shifting Demographics. Focuses on historical trends which created the demographic profile of twenty-first century Boston.

Selected Sources for Boston Statistics and Data

Many of the publications of the Boston Planning and Development Agency provide statistics as well as supporting infographics.  In addition to these resources, consider the following.

 

Comprehensive data on population, housing, and related topics.  (Bureau of the Census.  Pre-defined reports are available or the user may build tables by selecting different geographies and variables.
Analyze Boston is the open data portal for the City of Boston. Although the datasets aren't primarily demographic, they do provide insight into life in the city.
