Student Supervisors

Welcome to the student supervisor team! As a student supervisor, you play a pivotal role in the operation of Snell Library’s access services department. Student supervisors are the primary supervisor of both service points when on duty. Supervisors make it possible to keep service points open 90 hours a week by supervising the desks when full-time staff are unavailable. As a student supervisor, you are responsible for supervising student employees, resolving conflicts, and handling more advanced patron questions and concerns. Student supervisors should have a comprehensive knowledge of both service points and understand the role of the library in the wider campus community.

This training will cover the following topics:

  • Policies and procedures
  • Supervising peers
  • Emergency Response
  • LibAnswers

In addition, you should have already completed the trainings for all student workers, H&I assistants, access proctors, and leads. If you have not completed these trainings, please do so as soon as possible. The student supervisor training should be completed before your first shift. You can work on training during scheduled shifts or speak with Katie if you need additional time scheduled to complete them. (You are not expected to complete training on your own time outside of work hours!)

Student supervisors have a variety of responsibilities. Tasks may vary on a day to day basis, but you should generally keep these things in mind.

  • Open and close both service points
  • Supervise student employees
  • Respond to issues such as alarms, conflicts, & advanced questions
  • Monitor the LibAnswers dashboard
  • Communicate with staff
  • Manage keys
