Do I need an app?
You do not need an e-reader app. You may read books or listen to audiobooks in a web browser on any device. You can download the books as EPUB files and read them using software such as Adobe Digital Editions or Kindle. Depending on your device, you'll be asked to choose when you select your book.
Using an app from Overdrive optimizes your experience, however. Overdrive's apps allow you to not only read and listen, but manage your loans--to see what you have checked out, how long you have to read it, and manage your waiting list "holds". Either the Overdrive "classic" app or the Libby app may be used.
What is the difference between the OverDrive app and the Libby app?
Both Libby app and the OverDrive ("classic") app allow to you to borrow and enjoy e-books and audiobooks.
The Libby App is the newest app from OverDrive. The Libby app makes it easy to switch between multiple library collections if you are also using e-books and audiobooks at your local public library. You can find all your loans and holds on one "shelf".

The OverDrive app is the "classic app", and includes some features that are not yet available in the Libby app, such as streaming video, recommendations, as well as compatibility with Kindle Fire, mp3 players, and screen readers.

Mac OS users can download e-book EPUB files for reading text, but can no longer download audiobooks and have to stream them through the browser. Here are instructions for downloading audiobooks to any Mac that has not yet upgraded to the Catalina operating system.
