Policies and Services

Reference service:

Government documents reference assistance is available to all Library users. Visit or call Snell Library Research Assistance (617.373.2356) or contact Roxanne Palmatier (617.373.4968)

Most government publications are currently received in electronic format. Please call for assistance locating materials online.

Please note that access to federal publications and supporting reference services does not provide access to other University Libraries resources.  Visitors with research needs other than or in addition to government publications may wish to apply for a researcher pass.

Internet access:

Members of the public may use federal Internet resources at designated public access workstations in the Library. The Federal Government Information Subject Guide provides a starting point for research. This Federal Depository Library Subject Guide provides links to many Government Printing Office resources, including FDsys and Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids.

  • The Library does not use filtering software to restrict access to any Internet sites.
  • Users are asked to supply USB flash drive storage devices to download publications from federal web sites. Free scanners are available on each floor of the library. Please visit the Research Assistance Desk for assistance with printing and copying.

Access to Compact Discs and DVDs:

It is appreciated if users can provide advance notice of their visit to the Library so we can ensure that the desired cds/dvds will be available.  Due to our present workstation configurations and the disparity in technical specifications and access software of federal discs, it is not possible for us to provide on-demand access to all cd/dvd titles. When we are unable to provide appropriate technical support, arrangements may be made for users to borrow these discs.
