BIOL 2309: Methods and Protocols

Library research guide for BIOL2309, Techniques in Biology

Methods and Protocols

Methods and protocols can be surprisingly tricky to locate.  Whether looking for protocols in Scholar OneSearch, or a database like Web of Science, you'll likely have the most luck by searching for your topic and/or organism, plus a term like 'method', 'protocol', or other synonym.

Looking for protocols in resources geared towards these kinds of materials can be the most fruitful (and least frustrating!) approach. Here are some examples.

Sample resources for protocols

Methods in Cell Biology - new in August 2016!

 Methods in cell biology

Over its many years of publication, Methods in Cell Biology has built up a deep library of biological methods to study model developmental organisms, organelles and cell systems, as well as comprehensive coverage of microscopy and other analytical approaches.

Here are some specific volumes that might be of particular interest for your work in this course:

Molecular cloning:  a laboratory manual

A mainstay of molecular biology for over twenty years, this manual covers a range of techniques and protocols.  You can find it at call number QH422.2 .M26 on the fourth floor of Snell Library.

C. elegans:  Methods and applications

You can find this book of C. elegans methods at call number QL391.N4 on the fourth floor of the library.

JoVE:  the Journal of Visualized Experiments

JoVE is the world's first peer reviewed scientific video journal.  Watch experts perform protocols before attempting them yourself!

Western

Here's a basic methods video showing how to do a Western blot.

Nature Protocols

An online resource for authoritative, peer-reviewed protocols and an interactive Protocols Network. The two create a dynamic forum for scientists to upload and comment on protocols.

Company websites can be good resources for basic protocols.  Some examples:

New England Biolabs

Qiagen - Molecular biology methods

Other websites with protocols include:

Bio-protocol

OpenWetWare

Protocol Online

Protocols and Plasmids Reference Index (from Addgene.org)

Protocols.io
